Block D is a proposal for a collective housing building on a compact 250 sq m plot in Bucharest, situated between a public park and a neighborhood of single-family homes built in the 1990s.
This specific context brought to mind Jorge Oteiza’s sculpture Las Meninas, a reinterpretation of Diego Velázquez’s famous 1656 painting. In our case, the “block of stone” is shaped not by hand but by the constraints and conditions of the site itself.
Considering the required setbacks, the height of neighboring buildings, the existing street front, the irregular shape of the plot, its North-South orientation, and the open views toward the park, we approached the project as a process of subtraction. From the maximum allowable volume, we carved out piece by piece the elements that didn’t fit the intended vision. The resulting form defines the building as a dark monolith—subdued, overtaken by cascading greenery. It is present and visible from the street, yet subtly camouflaged within its environ-ment.

Blocul D este o propunere pentru o clădire de locuințe colective pe un teren compact de 250 mp din București, situat între un parc public și un cartier de case unifamiliale construite în anii ’90.
Acest context particular ne-a dus cu gândul la sculptura Las Meninas a lui Jorge Oteiza, o rein-terpretare a celebrei picturi din 1656 realizate de Diego Velázquez. În cazul nostru, „blocul de piatră” este modelat nu de mâna artistului, ci de constrângerile și condițiile impuse de am-plasament.
Ținând cont de aliniamentele obligatorii, înălțimea clădirilor învecinate, frontul stradal exist-ent, forma neregulată a terenului, orientarea Nord-Sud și deschiderea către parc, am abordat proiectul ca pe un proces de subtractie. Din volumul maxim permis, am eliminat, treptat, ele-mentele care nu se potriveau scenariului dorit. Forma rezultată definește volumul clădirii ca pe un monolit întunecat—temperat, acaparat de vegetație cățărătoare. Este vizibil de pe stradă, dar discret camuflat în peisajul înconjurător.
